Dal Fry

Dal fry is one of the most simple and comfortable main dish in South Indian cuisine. Try this restaurant style easy Dal fry recipe and serve it along with any of flat Indian Roti or Rice!!!

Ingredients For Cooking Dal:
  1. Tuvar dal(arhar dal) -1/2 cup
  2. Water-1 1/2 cup
  3. Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
  4. Salt-to taste
Ingredients For Seasoning:
  1. Ghee-2 tbsp
  2. Mustard seeds-1/4 tsp
  3. Cumin seeds-1/4 tsp
  4. Asafoetida(hing/kayam)-a pinch
  5. Dry red chilly-2 no's
  6. Chopped green chilly-1
  7. Chopped ginger-1 tsp
  8. Chilly powder-1 tsp (optional)
  9. Thinly chopped tomato-1 large
  10. Amchoor powder(mango powder)-1 /4 tsp
  11. Garam masala powder- a pinch
  12. Chopped coriander leaves-1 tbsp
  • Wash and soak the dal in water for 30 minutes.
  • After that drain it and add it in to a pressure cooker along with 1 1/2 cup of water, enough salt and turmeric powder.
  • Pressure cooks on high-medium flame for one whistle. (or you can cook in a pot for about 30minutes).
  • Open the lid only after releasing the pressure by itself and do seasoning.
  • Heat a pan with ghee; splutter mustard seeds followed by cumin seeds.
  • Make the flame to simmer (very low) ; add dry red chilly, hing, chopped ginger and green chilly; saute for a minute.
  • Add chilly powder and chopped tomatoes.
  • Saute until tomatoes are mashed well.
  • Add amchoor powder, garam masala powder and cooked dal.
  • Check for salt and allow to boil.
  • Switch off the flame for required consistency (thick or thin gravy).
  • Sprinkle coriander leaves on top and serve hot along with Roti or rice!!!
