Green Gram with Spinach curry / Cheera-Cherupayaru Curry


A healthy and delicious combo curry recipe using green gram and spinach.
Ingredients:
  1. Green Gram (cherupayar)- 1/2 cup
  2. Spinach- one bunch
  3. Grated coconut- 1/4 cup
  4. Small onion (shallots)-3 nos
  5. Cumin seeds- 1/2 tsp
  6. Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
  7. Chilly powder- 1/2 tsp
  8. Green chilly-2 nos
  9. Salt-to taste
For Seasoning:
  1. Coconut oil- 1  tbsp
  2. Mustard seeds- 1/2 tsp
  3. Chopped garlic- 1/2 tsp
  4. Red chilly flakes- 1 tsp
  5. Curry leaves-2 spring
Preparation:
  • Soak green gram in water for an hour (or more).
  • Pressure cooks it with enough water by adding turmeric powder, chilly powder and salt for three whistles or until cooked.
  • Meanwhile grind the grated coconut with shallots and cumin seeds to a smooth paste by adding little water.
  • Open the pressure cooker after releasing the pressure; add grated coconut paste, chopped spinach and enough hot water (if required).
  • Cooks n low flame until curry starts boiling.
  • Switch off the flame and do seasoning.
  • Heat oil in a pan; splutter mustard seeds, add garlic and saute for a minute; then add red chilly flakes and curry leaves.
  • Add it in to the curry and mix well before serving with hot steamed rice.
