Tamarind Rice

 Tamarind rice is a traditional South Indian recipe cooked on special occasions. The cooked basmati rice is mixed with a tamarind base sauce and it results a delicious tangy rice.

  1. Cooked basmati rice-2 cup
  2. Coconut oil-2 tbsp
  3. Mustard seeds-1 tsp
  4. Methi seeds- 1/4 tsp
  5. Urad dal- 1/4 tsp
  6. Dry red chilly-2 nos
  7. Curry leaves-a spring
  8. Roasted peanut-1 tbsp
  9. Roasted dal-1 tbsp
  10. Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
  11. Coriander powder-1 tsp
  12. Cumin powder- 1/4 tsp
  13. Pepper powder- 1/2 tsp
  14. Chilly powder- 1/2 tsp
  15. Asafoetida- a generous pinch
  16. Salt-to taste
  17. Tamarind- a lemon size ball
  18. Grated jaggery-1 tbsp (or less)
  • Soak tamarind in a cup of hot water for 15 minutes.
  • After that mix it well and take its pulp and discard the seeds. keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan; splutter mustard seeds followed by methi seeds and urad dal.
  • Add dry red chilly, curry leaves, roasted pea nuts and roasted dal
  • Mix well for a  minute.
  • Make the flame to simmer. Add all the powders one by one by mixing well.
  • Then add tamarind soaked water and grated jaggery.
  • Cook for about 10-15 minutes in low flame or until the gravy gets thick sauce consistency.
  • At this stage add cooked rice; Mix nicely for a minute and switch off the flame.

Note: You can also use cooked raw rice instead of Basmati rice (as it is the traditional way).
