Kadala (Kala Chana) Curry

Kadala (Kala Chana) Curry is a regular south Indian curry served in side with the breakfast; especially with puttu (steamed rice cake). It is a comfort choice of curry for most of all. 
  1. Black chickpea / kala chana – 1cup
  2. Oil-2 tbsp
  3. Mustard seeds-1tsp
  4. Dry red chilly-2 nos
  5. Curry leaves-2 string
  6. Green chilly slit-1
  7. Onion-1big
  8. Tomato-1 small
  9. Ginger garlic crushed-2tsp
  10. Turmeric powder- ½tsp
  11. Chilly powder-1tsp
  12. Coriander powder-1tbsp
  13. Garam masala- ¼tsp
  14. Freshly grated coconut- 1/4 cup
  15. Coriander leaves-few (optional)
  • Soak chick peas in water for over night.
  • Pressure cooks it with enough more water, salt and turmeric powder.
  • Mean while heat oil in a kadai and splutter mustard seeds.
  • Add dry red chilly, curry leaves and green chilly.
  • Add ginger garlic crushed in to this and sauté for a minute.
  • Add onion and sauté until transparent and golden in color.
  • Add all the powders one by one and mix well after each addition (at simmer mode; don’t burn the powders).
  • Add chopped tomatoes and sauté well until all the tomato pieces are mashed well.
  • Add cooked chick peas in to the kadai along with its stock water.
  • Blend grated coconut with little water in a bender in to smooth.
  • Add it in to the curry and cooks for about 5 to 10 minutes until the curry starts thickening.
  • Add  More hot water (if u need) according to the consistency of the curry.
  • Switch of the flame and sprinkle Coriander leaves on top;mix well and serve.
