Raw Jack-Fruit Poriyal / Chakka Puzhukku

Raw jack-fruit poriyal or chakka puzhukku is a Kerala traditional dish. Its so easy to make and tastes delicious. It is  served as a accompaniment with rice or some of them eat it itself with a cup of tea. Using jack-fruit seeds in it is optional but it gives a nice crunch along with the jack-fruit.
  1. Raw Jack-fruit - 3 cups
  2. Jack fruit seeds- 1cup(optional)
  3. Turmeric powder- ½ tsp
  4. Salt-to taste
  5. Coconut grated- ½ cup
  6. Cumin seeds- ½ tsp
  7. Green chilly- 2 nos
  8. Garlic- one pod
  9. Coconut oil- 1 ½ tbsp
  10. Mustard seeds-1 tsp
  11. Dry red chilly-1
  12. Curry leaves-2 springs
  • Pressure cook cleaned jack-fruit seeds (cut one in to two or three pieces) with little water salt until cooked well but not mashed (3-4 whistles). Keep aside.
  • Choose jack-fruits which are raw but about to ripe; cut them in to one inch cubes.
  • Cook it with just enough water to cover, salt and turmeric powder until cooked well but not mashed and almost all water gets dried.
  • At this time add cooked jack fruit seeds and grinded coconut. (grind coconut along with green chilly, garlic and cumin seeds).
  • Mix well and lust mash the pieces with ladle. Cook for a minute and switch off the flame.
  • Now season it with heating coconut oil; splutter mustard seeds, add dry red chilly and curry leaves.
  • Add it in the jack fruit and mix well.
  • Serve hot with a cup of tea or as an accompaniment with rice.
