Semolina / Rava Unniyappam

Unniyappam is a Kerala traditional snack recipe. It's a fried appam recipe. Rava unniyappam is a quick and another tasty variation. Here is the simple recipe preparation.

  1. Semolina/ rava-1cup
  2. Rice flour- ½ cup
  3. Banana (poovan pazham / palayan codan)-2
  4. Coconut scraped- ¼ cup
  5. Black sesame seeds-1tbsp
  6. Baking soda- a pinch
  7. Cardamom powder- ¼ tsp
  8. Oil-for frying
  9. Ghee-4tsp
  • Heat ghee in a pan, roast scraped coconuts until golden in colour.
  • Take it out from the ghee and keep aside.
  • In the remaining ghee add semolina and roast for 1-2 minutes until its color starts changing.
  • Melt jaggery with little water.
  • When it melts completely strain it to remove impurities.
  • Now mix semolina, rice flour, baking soda, sesame seeds, cardamom powder and coconut scraped.
  • Add mashed bananas in to it.
  • Add melted jaggery little by little and make a thick (idli batter consistency) dough.
  • Let it rest for 15 minutes.
  • Heat oil in the unniyappam pan.
  • Pour the batter in to each impression up to its ¾ th level.
  • Don’t flip in to the other side quickly. Then it sticks in the pan. So that once it is done completely , then turn in to the other side.
  • Fry on medium low flame until both sides are golden brown in color.
  • Drain in to paper towels and serve after cools down.
