Red Fish Curry / Meen Mulakittathu

Red fish curry / meen mulakittathu is a signature recipe in Kerala. In most of the houses; it’s must to have a fish curry for their meal. I would like to serve this curry with rice, tapioca and pathiri. The curry tastes better after one day; so keep it little for the next day also.

  1. Fish  pieces-5-7 (use any fish)
  2. Gambooge (kudampuli) – 2 pieces
  3. Shallots-6 nos
  4. Ginger-1 small inch piece
  5. Garlic-5 cloves
  6. Green chilly-2 nos
  7. Turmeric powder- ½ tsp
  8. Kashmiri Red chilly powder-1tsp
  9. Coriander powder-1tsp
  10. Tomato-1
  11. Water-2cups
  12. Coconut oil-2tbsp
  13. Fenugreek seeds- ¼ tsp
  14. Mustard seeds-1tsp
  15. Curry leaves-2 string
  • Soak kudampuli in 2 cups of water and keep aside.
  • In a pan (clay pot is preferable) heat oil, splutter mustard seeds and then add fenugreek seeds.
  • Add curry leaves, shallots, ginger and garlic.
  • Sauté for few minutes until raw smell goes off.
  • Add tomato pieces and saute for few minutes.
  • Add turmeric powder, chilly powder and coriander powder in a low flame.
  • Quickly add soaked kudumpuli along with its water in to the pan.
  • Allow to boil.
  • When it boils add fish pieces, salt and curry leaves.
  • Flip the fish pieces  in other side after 7 minutes of cooking.
  • Cook on low-medium flame for 10-15 minutes until the fish pieces get cooked.
  • Serve hot with steamed rice.
