Idli Podi / Karam Podi

Idli podi or karam podi is a nutritious powder served as a side dish for idli or even with rice and dosa. This podi can be made with our own combination of ingredients. You can add cashew nut or pea nut along with the ingredients as per your choice. Serve idli podi along with sprinkling some ghee or oil on top.

  1. Oil-2tsp
  2. Chana daal-1cup
  3. Urad daal-1/4 cup
  4. Coriander seeds- ¼ cup
  5. Dried red chillies-10
  6. Tamarind-half of a lemon size (or even a small piece)
  7. Garlic-6 cloves
  8. Curry leaves-3stirng
  9. Hing / asfoetida-1 pinch
  10. Salt-to taste
  • In a heavy bottomed pan heat a teaspoon of oil and add chana dal.
  • Roast it on low flame for 2 minutes.
  • Add urad dal and roast for another a minute.
  • Add curry leaves, dry red chilly, garlic cloves and tamarind piece.
  • Roast in very slow flame don’t allow to burn anything.
  • Roast until curry leaves get a crispy texture. (few minutes)
  • Add hing and salt; switch off the flame.
  • Allow it to cool completely.
  • Put it in a blender and blend well in to a fine powder.
  • Store it in an airtight container for long use.
  • Serve it along with idli or dosa by spreading some ghee or oil on top of it.
Here is another variation of idli podi. in this preparation I used Kashmiri chilly powder and lesser curry leaves.
