Every traditional Malabar recipes are rich and tastes great. Areeram is one of the tasty Malabar special tea time snack. It also called Al-boori. Once you make it, you can store it in a air tight container and use for longer.

  1. Raw rice -2cup
  2. Coconut grated-half of a coconut
  3. Shallots – 5nos
  4. Jaggery- ¼ kg
  5. Cardamom powder- ¼tsp
  • Wash and soak raw rice in water for overnight.
  • After that blend it coarsely (having little crisps to bite in it; not smooth) without adding any  water.
  • Grind coconut grated and shallots to smooth paste consistency.
  • Melt jaggery by adding little water and strain it.
  • Mix blended rice, cardamom and coconut grated well.
  • Add jaggery melted little by little until it reaches a thick dough consistency.
  • Let it rest for at least 4 hours.
  • Make small portion from this and make a vada (uzhunn vada) shape round with it.
  • Deep fry it in the hot oil until both sides are crisp and golden brown in color.
  • Drain in to paper towels and serve.
  • After cools down store it in an airtight container for long use.
